Interns

Jocelyn

Lindsay

Media Intern
Texas A&M University

It's about a 40 minute to an hour commute for me to get to work but I enjoy the companionship of the radio. I'm from Rockwall, which is the smallest county (land-wise) in Texas. Tuck that bit of knowledge away for the next time you and your friends play a rousing game of Texas Trivia.

Zach

"CEO Intern"
University of Texas at Austin

I am the tallest of the interns, which, according to two Princeton professors, means I will make the most money in my career. "Their work concludes that taller people are more successful because they are smarter," (student newspaper at Northeastern Univ. 9/27/06).

Victor

Creative Copywriter Intern
Ohio University

I win the "not from around these parts award" (unofficially self-nominated) this summer for being a whopping 1,184 miles away from home. Home, for me, is Cleveland, Ohio. I ended up spending one of the most exciting summers of my life in Texas thanks to an AAF scholarship.

Steve

Programming Intern
University of Texas at Dallas

I am the youngest of all the interns and am attending UT Dallas. My summer was spent working, going to school and playing Ultimate Frisbee.

Matt "Other Matt"

Creative Copywriter Intern
Southern Methodist University

One day they will look back and remember me, or my persona December. It might be for a great idea that changed the world or my small part of it, or it might be for the randomness that spews forth from my mouth like a perpetual chocolate fondue fountain.

Matt

Creative Copywriter / Production Intern
Oklahoma State University

I spent my summer here sleeping on the apartment floor of a guy I went to college with, but it saved me some rent money (which I spent on booze and golf). I graduate in December and plan on moving to Dallas after that (not because Texas is better than Oklahoma, but because I can get a better job here).

Jocelyn

Account Service Intern
University of Texas at Austin

I recently graduated from UT with a Master's in Advertising. I started working as a summer intern at Slingshot. After two weeks and an interview, I was hired as a full-time employee to work on the Jack Daniel's Global account. Talk about a quick turn-around!

Kristen

Account Service Intern
University of Texas at Austin

Besides advertising, I'm passionate about several things that are important to me: urban outreach programs, volunteering, the broken educational system and, overall, the community. I think I'll just go ahead and fix the world. Call me Superwoman.

Franziska

Programming Intern
Berufskolleg Technik

I am from Germany and wanted to intern in America so I could learn the language better, and so I could start working here next year. I am also a great basketball player, now, since there was a basketball hoop across from my desk.

The Program

As an advertising intern at Slingshot, you'll get hands-on experience. Like this website for instance, an intern wrote the copy you're reading right now, created the site you’re looking at, and filmed the videos you've just watched. And of course, account interns “directed” the whole thing. If you’re interested in an internship where you actually create something, then continue reading.

The Slingshot Internship is an opportunity to gain real experience with real clients in a real agency. You will participate in every aspect of a campaign from client interest to execution. The 10-week program is similar to an entry-level position at the agency, but with a little more learning and guidance. You will even have a mentor to offer nuggets of wisdom and insight along the way. And to answer the question you’re afraid to ask, yes, the internship is paid.

The Departments

Departments with positions available:

Account Service
Creative
Media
Programming

The projects for each position will differ as the client work changes, but the uniting factor is the Intern Project. This site was created as the intern project for 2008. It was entirely intern written and driven, like the human-feet-powered car from that cartoon that I can’t name directly because of copyright issues. The client was Slingshot, which was convenient, since we were experiencing the service we would be advertising.

The Requirements

The list of qualifications is short, and therefore pretty important:

Good attitude
Willingness to learn
An interest in a career in Advertising, Marketing, or Programming

If you are applying as an Art Director or Copywriter intern, please send a portfolio or samples of your university work.

Slingshot

Awalt Building

Opened in 1995, Slingshot is a multi-dexterous agency that creates advertising that ranges from traditional to interactive to viral. The site, www.DavidandGoliath.com , and the name Slingshot do not refer to the size of our clients, but rather the idea that no matter what the problem, there is a specific answer that will solve it. Sometimes there are many answers, such as television and web design working together. Regardless, Slingshot is committed to creating perfect combinations for our clients.

Originally a farming warehouse for BF Avery and Sons, the Awalt Building was built in 1905. It housed furniture after the 1950s until it became an uninhabited building slated for demolition. It was rescued and renovated in 2000 by Slingshot Founder and CEO, Owen Hannay.

Dallas

The Slingshot building is located in the historic Dallas West End. Restaurants and nightlife are all within walking distance, as are history and art museums such as the 6th Floor Museum (JFK) and the Dallas Art Museum. The Dart Light Rail Station offers access to other vital points of the Metroplex. Venues like the House of Blues and American Airlines Center (both less than 2 miles from the building) offer mainstream performances, while smaller bars and clubs bolster Dallas as a growing local music scene. A few miles away, Uptown offers local theaters and even more culturally diverse culinary fare. Texas is known for its heat, but there are plenty of ways to beat it as long as you know where to look, and the Awalt Building (home of Slingshot) has massive air conditioners.
